Purgatory Pie Press

Purgatory Pie Press founders Dikko Faust and Esther K. Smith make limited editions and artist books and have collaborated with more than 100 other artists. At the Brooklyn Fine Art Print Fair, they will show recent works by Sam Vernon, Bob and Roberta Smith, April Vollmer, Susan Happersett, and Elizabeth Duffy, plus works from the Purgatory Pie Press archive.


Dikko Faust prints via letterpress from modular wood and metal type and typographic elements and utilizes relief techniques including moiré, collagraph, white line, linoleum, and woodcut.

Esther K. Smith conceptualizes, designs, develops structures and stitches books, and creates Risograph prints as EK Sm.ith Museum. Esther K. Smith wrote and designed HOW to MAKE BOOKS and other book arts books for Random House and Rizzoli.


Purgatory Pie Press works are in museums and rare book collections all over the world, from Los Angeles to Azerbaijan, MoMA, Cooper Hewitt, Brooklyn Museum, SF MoMA, and Tate Modern. Its works have been exhibited worldwide including MoMA, the Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and London's Victoria & Albert Museum.


Purgatory Pie Press also functions as an atelier, producing fine art prints and books for artists and galleries. In addition, Faust and Smith teach workshops and classes in the metropolitan New York area and beyond.
